Colorectal Cancer Screening Tests
The American Cancer Society has recently recommended starting at 45, due to an increase in colorectal cancer in younger people. Colorectal cancer is it one of the most common types of cancer for both men and women, but it’s also one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths. Luckily, you can help prevent colorectal cancer through early detection.
What is Colorectal Cancer Screening?
The purpose of a screening test is to look for the early warning signs of cancer. Although you may not be experiencing any physical symptoms, you may have unseen problems that you’re not aware of. In fact, every case of colorectal cancer begins with harmless precancerous polyps. These polyps can be detected, monitored and removed during a screening test. If not removed, those polyps could eventually develop into cancer.
What is a Colonoscopy?
A colonoscopy is the most common screening test for colorectal cancer. At the beginning of the procedure you will receive intravenous medication to prevent discomfort. During the procedure, the doctor inserts a thin, flexible lighted tube into the rectum. The tube is long enough for the doctor to see inside the entire colon, which is also known as the large intestine. They’ll check to see if there are any signs of disease, such as polyps, which if found will be removed.
Remember, the earlier cancer is caught, the earlier it can be stopped. Scheduling regular testing can mean the difference between fast detection and treatment and a more serious experience, especially if you’re at an elevated risk for colorectal cancer.
