What Is Gynecology?

Gynecology is a medical field that focuses on the health of the female reproductive system. At Vanguard Medical Group, many of our Family Medicine providers include office gynecology in their practice. This means they are able to take care of routine gynecologic check-ups, including pap smears and breast exams, as well as the evaluation of symptoms/concerns involving the reproductive system. Examples of reproductive health issues you can discuss with your Family Doctor are:

  • Issues with menstruation, pregnancy, fertility, and menopause
  • Family planning /Contraception
  • STIs
  • Polycystic ovarian syndrome
  • Endometriosis
  • Pelvic Pain
  • Uterine Fibroids

When a pelvic examination is needed, your Family Doctor may use a tool called a speculum to examine your cervix and vagina. During a pelvic exam, the doctor can also evaluate your ovaries and uterus. Our Family Physicians are here to help you understand your body, healthy sexual practices, pregnancy, and openly discuss any questions you have regarding your reproductive and sexual health.

Benefits of Gynecology Exams

As your family medicine providers, we discuss with parents when it’s appropriate to begin gynecologic exams for their children. During routine physical exams for adolescents, we cover topics of sexual development, menstruation, sexual activity, the prevention of sexually transmitted infections, and when to start pap smears. Because of the trusting relationships we have with our patients, it’s a natural transition for our pediatric patients to receive gynecologic care from our Family Doctors when the appropriate time comes.

There are a variety of benefits for women who receive annual gynecology exams. Besides maintaining good reproductive health, gynecology exams also provide:

  • Early detection of infections (like STIs, bacterial vaginosis, yeast infections)
  • Early detection of serious conditions like cancer
  • A better understanding of your body and sexual health
  • Birth control to prevent unwanted pregnancy and control period symptoms
  • Education and treatment of symptoms as women make the transition through menopause

You should visit your Family Doctor once a year for a routine health check and to decide on a schedule for gynecologic exams that makes sense based on your age and health history. You should also visit your Family Doctor any time you are experiencing symptoms.
