Dr. Pareen Lapsiwala Merges Traditional and Holistic Healthcare

“Integrative medicine works with traditional Western medicine to treat the whole person – body, mind and spirit. It’s especially helpful in the management of stress and anxiety.”

As a first-generation American, Dr. Pareen Lapsiwala watched her parents work hard to give her and her brother every opportunity. That was her motivation to choose a career where she could help others too. She chose family medicine, because although she loves kids, pediatrics was too limiting. “I wanted to be able to treat the whole family,” she says. “It’s very comfortable for an entire family to see one doctor. They’re able to build better relationships, and they’re more likely to come back.”

Today, Dr. Lapsiwala is an osteopathic family physician who brings expertise in women’s health care along with preventive, acute, chronic care and integrative medicine. She found a good fit at Vanguard, where she can work in a physician-led practice that is at the forefront of primary care. Part of that cutting-edge approach is the incorporation of integrative medicine that treats body, mind and spirit using holistic methods. “This may include Ayurvedic medicine, developed more than 3,000 years ago in India,” she says, “or acupuncture, yoga or meditation, used in conjunction with traditional therapies. Not everyone is open to this type of therapy, but I find that it works well in reducing anxiety and stress. It also sometimes helps with patients who want to avoid taking medication.”

Dr. Lapsiwala maintains a strong focus on preventive care, which she acknowledges is “a huge part of family medicine.” “Healthy lifestyle changes are the foundation for alleviating so many conditions.”

She is fluent in Gujarati, and conversational in Hindi and Spanish. Raised in New Jersey, she currently lives in Bloomfield. When she’s not working, Dr. Lapsiwala enjoys Indian cultural dancing, as well as cooking, traveling and spending time with family.

I'm not exactly sure what the process is when they receive the bloodwork results, but I plan on calling next week if I don't hear from them.

I had a very positive experience with the care provider (Dr. Lapsiwala) but wish that I had asked for an analysis of whether it was a bacterial or viral acute upper respiratory infection. This would impact whether or not an antibiotic (such as the azithromycin I was taking) would be effective).
