Dr. Arnold Pallay Blends Family and Precision Medicine for Personalized Health Care

“My patients know that I am a little bit of a Sherlock Holmes, or sleuth, when it comes to their health and wellness. With exams, diagnostic testing and a family history, I’m able to arrive at a very detailed diagnosis, including forecasting possible diseases to which they might be susceptible.”

Before he even graduated from high school, Dr. Arnold Pallay was accepted into the medical school of his choice. He knew early on that he wanted to use his talent in math and science to “give back,” and he chose the accelerated MD program at Boston University to start him on that path.

Today, Dr. Pallay enjoys the variety of a family medical practice, from sports medicine to pediatrics, geriatrics and more. Importantly, if a patient wishes to be seen on a given day, Dr. Pallay makes sure it happens. “When a patient needs me, he or she can be certain that I will spend the additional time and go the extra measure to ensure their health. I also am diligent in my follow-up, whether it’s the same day or a weekend. Even on vacation, I call my patients. That’s how I built my practice, and it’s the foundation of Vanguard.”

A lifelong learner, Dr. Pallay continues to further his medical education, and in mid-career he began extensive training in genetics/genomics at Harvard University, Scripps Clinic and Cleveland Clinic. Known also as precision medicine, this new area of medicine allows physicians to predict diseases by examining genetic codes. They can then design highly personalized care plans. “Predicting cardiac disease or cancer aligns perfectly with the work that I do as a family physician,” he notes. “Through knowing my patients’ family histories, I can identify who would benefit from this specialized testing.”

Dr. Pallay’s expertise extends well beyond Vanguard. He is founding director of the Jacobs Levy Equity Management Personalized Genomic Medicine Program at Atlantic Health System, and currently serves as its associate medical director. He has served as president of the New Jersey Academy of Family Physicians and the Morris County Medical Society. He also has served on the Montville Board of Health for over 10 years. He is the senior New Jersey delegate to the American Academy of Family Physicians. He writes for the Core Content of Family Practice on medical genetics, and lectures extensively on issues in primary care, health care reform and medical genetics.

When he’s not working, Dr. Pallay enjoys playing golf and tennis, photography, traveling, and spending time with his family. Visit Dr. Pallay’s leadership biography to learn more about his role as Director of Practice Development.

Dr Palay spoke to all the issues, and most notably to my mental concerns, the need to comb down, he sensed I was my normal self , this visit and I wasnt. His insight and care for me and my family is above today's standard of care.

I am a creature of habit and I absolutely dread having to change doctors. This is a change after seeing the same GP for 22 years and it was so good. I anticipated this survey because I wanted to say such a huge THANK YOU!

*Dr. Pallay always good. Moves and speaks rapidly, but slows down if you have questions. I know live 50 miles away, but keep him as my doctor.
