Dr. Richard Cirello Has Been Building Relationships with Patients for Decades

“The reality is that medicine, especially primary care, is a bit of a social science – unlike pathology where you look into a microscope and read what you see. To be an effective health care professional, you need insight into what people are like as individuals.”

Family medicine was Dr. Richard Cirello’s second career. His first career was in retail pharmacy, where he had a great deal of interaction with patients and doctors. Being a pharmacist gave him insight into the world of family medicine, and the respect he gained for family doctors was the impetus for him to return to medical school.

According to Dr. Cirello, he started out in a solo practice that over the years grew from a two- doctor office to a four-doctor office, which then became part of Vanguard Medical Group, a patient-centered medical home with six locations. Vanguard focuses on care for children, adults and seniors in Northern and Central New Jersey. “We have come a long way, but the thing I am the most proud of is that as a group, we offer comprehensive primary care where the patients come first,” states Dr. Cirello.

The staff takes a team-based approach to provide quality health care in the office and during home visits for those who can’t get to the office. As Dr. Cirello explains, “Our team provides general primary care to those with acute conditions and chronic conditions, as well as preventive care to keep people healthy.”

Dr. Cirello’s medical career has been robust and rewarding. “My personal philosophy is that a lot of life is about relationships. Over the years, I’ve cultivated a rapport with patients whom I’ve treated for generations – grandparents, children and parents in between. This is not unlike a friendship. Despite the fact that these connections have given me the insight to be a better doctor, they are relationships that I benefit from also; they have given me emotional growth,” he says.

Dr. Cirello is the school physician for Verona Public Schools, which includes its sports teams. When he is not at one of the town’s sporting events, you might find him practicing his swing and/or playing a friendly round of golf.

Very Good!

Jan 11, 2017

was prescribed an antibiotic that had a major drug interaction with another drug I take for my asthma. The asthma drug prescription originated from your practice. After taking medications for 48 hours, was having sugar shakes (high glucose) after eating lunch, my pulse was pounding (high blood pressure) and I was feeling off.

He couldn't have cared less. I explained my history and all he could tell me that the lump in my throat was stress and he would give me a scrip for "something" til today I have no idea what it was because the pharmacy never got it2 days later I went for an esophageal on my own from a different doctor where it was found I have a narrowing of my throat to less than 1cm

This was not a very thorough physical. Yes, I am a outwardly very healthy man, but 10 minutes for a "complete" physical, really? Also, two of my blood scores (glucose - fasting) and my AST were slightly elevated. The Doctor said that he wanted to repeat the tests for those but did not write an Rx. When I asked about that at the South Nurses Station the woman behind the desk said she would ask the doc and get back to me by telephone, which she never did...

Sprained ankle: he explained the anatomy of my ankle and foot. What options there were. He was very good, and I learned a lot.
