Christine Hawxhurst Views Helping Patients as a Privilege

“Patient education is key to preventing many medical illnesses. One of the most important things that we can do is to talk to our patients about wellness.”

Science was Christine Hawxhurst’s favorite subject in school, and she knew she wanted to build a career around it. But two years of medical research in college taught her that not all aspects of science suited her equally well. She ultimately found the missing piece, and her passion, in primary care.

“When I started working with patients, that’s when I knew that this was it,” she says. “I valued the relationships, the continuity of care, and being able to make a difference in someone’s life. It’s also why I chose Vanguard, because there’s a history here of building relationships and longevity of care.”

Wellness is a large focus of her practice. Christine counsels her patients on high blood pressure, diet, and exercise, among other items. “Educating patients is just as much our responsibility as prescribing the right medication,” she says, “and sometimes making those lifestyle changes can help reduce the need for that medication.”

Her patients tell Christine that she’s approachable, which helps them to confide in her. “It’s a privilege that we get to do this, to talk to patients and help them change their lives,” she says. “That motivates me every day.”

During her spare time, Christine enjoys cooking and baking. She also likes to go to the beach, and when time allows, practice her jujitsu.

Thank you again for a wonderful experience. I have been using another facility and sometimes wait up to 1 1/2 hours to be seen and the staff is not always encouraging or supportive. I really appreciate the respect that I was shown and care for my health.
