Carol Maute Combines Holistic Healing with Health Care Expertise
“I use all of my knowledge to help my patients have productive and healthy lives, and that may include a blend of medical, psychological and natural healing techniques.”
Carol Maute can’t remember when she didn’t want to be a nurse. She began her career as a surgical nurse and then worked in general pediatrics and with handicapped children. Her career became more defined as she focused her specialty in the areas of mental and behavioral health. As a psychiatric nurse practitioner, Carol worked in hospital settings and clinics. She also spent time counseling in the corrections behavioral health division of the Center for Family Guidance and in outpatient services at St. Claire’s Hospital, working with patients in crisis who were in sub-acute as well as assisted living facilities.
Carol joined Vanguard as a member of the behavioral health team in 2016. She brings three decades of experience in family medicine and behavioral health. She is also an accredited holistic nurse who treats patients with alternative healing methods using energy healing. According to Carol, “I am a Reiki Master teacher certified to use reflexology, Reiki and shiatsu as part of a health care regimen. I’ve been practicing these alternative disciplines for some time, and while on staff at Valley Hospital, I was asked to develop the curriculum for Reiki training for the staff and public.”
At Vanguard, she sees patients from adolescents through seniors. “When I found Vanguard, I was intrigued by its patient-centered medical home model where medical and psychiatric treatments are combined. For me, it was a natural fit, being able to continue to use my medical expertise with my mental health experience in a primary care environment.” In addition to wellness coaching, she counsels on medication management, nutrition, vitamins, and dealing with generalized anxiety, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and illness anxiety disorder.
When she’s not working, Carol keeps busy with her private holistic practice and spending time with her grandchildren and her dogs.
